Um schnelle Reisezüge im engen Netz der D-Züge zu bespannen, bestellte die Deutsche Reichsbahn 1939 insgesamt 55 Lokomotiven der Baureihe 01.10. Der Vorteil der Schnellzugdampfloks war die Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 140 km/h. Auch auf Steigungen hielten die Loks bei Reisezügen eine konstante Geschwindigkeit von rund 100 km/h. Im Zuge des Umbaus bei der Deutschen Bundesbahn auf Ölfeuerung erhielten die Dampfrösser ab 1968 die Baureihenbezeichnung 012.
